There were little feet
Running about Song My.
Playful little feet
Moving lightly
In the whitening sand.
There were little voices
Laughing at play in song My,
Little voices of children
Moving in safety
Round their mother.
But fear lay heavy
Over the eyes of the adults
And the eyes of the children
Looked into the eyes of the adults
And saw the deadly image of fear.
And the soldiers came
In their helmets of steel
And with hands
Full of bullets and death.
And the child looks appealing
Up to its mother:
“Take my hand, mother, please!”
But her mother is cold
And her hand is cold
And the child falls with wondering eyes
On the blood-stained earth.
And the soldiers trample
On little feet in Song My
Little feet that moved so lightly
In the whitening sand.

Massdödandet i Song My den 16 mars 1968 väckte ett ramaskri i omvärlden
och underminerade amerikanarnas stöd för landets krig i Vietnam. 504 människor dödades.
Efter mer än 40 år ber den amerikanskeföre detta officeren William Calley om förlåtelse för massmordet i den sydvietmanesiska kommunen Song My 1968.
– Inte en enda dag går utan att jag känner samvetskval för det sm hände den där dagen i My Lai (Song My), sade Calley i onsdags (20/8) i ett anförande vid ett slutet möte i Georiga. Han använde det etablerade, men felaktiga, amerikanska benämningen på Song My.
– Jag har dåligt samvete för vietnameserna som dödades, för deras familjer, för de amerikanske soldater som deltog och deras familjer. Jag är väldigt ledsen, sade William Calley.
Calleys närmaste överordnade kapten Ernest Medina rentvåddes frn alla misstankar med hjälp av en skicklig advokat.
En av de som överlevde massakerna i Son My, Pham Thanh Cong, är idag chef för museet vid minnesplatsen över massakern.
Vietnamkriget avslutades den 30 april 1975.
